Community Pool Electricity Costs in Spain

Swimming pools are often one of the largest electricity consumers in apartment communities and urbanisations across Spain. This guide explains how much community pools typically cost to run.

Pool Electricity Summary

Typical Usage

3,000 - 8,000 kWh

Standard non-heated communal pool running 8-12 hours daily in summer.

Annual Cost

€600 - €2,500

Varies significantly based on pump efficiency and seasonal runtime schedules.

Heated Pools

€3,000+

Winter heating via heat pumps can triple electricity consumption.

Waste Areas

Over-filtration

Many pools run for 12+ hours when 6-8 would be sufficient for hygiene.

What Uses Electricity in Community Pools?

Filtration Pumps

The primary motor that circulates water through the filters. Typically 1.5HP to 3HP.

Heat Pumps

Electricity-hungry systems used to maintain water temperature in winter/shoulder seasons.

Lighting

Underwater LEDs and pool-area floodlights. Older halogen systems are very inefficient.

Circulation/Features

Waterfalls, fountains, and secondary circulation pumps for infinity edges.

Pool Pump Electricity Consumption

A standard 2HP pump consumes approximately 1.5kW per hour. If it runs for 10 hours a day, it uses 15kWh. Over a 4-month summer season, that's 1,800kWh for a single pump.
1.5HP Pump1.1 kW / hour
2.0HP Pump1.5 kW / hour
3.0HP Pump2.2 kW / hour

Filtration Runtime & Scheduling

Most communities over-filter their pools. In Spain, health regulations require specific turnover rates, but this doesn't mean the pump must run 24/7. Moving the bulk of filtration to the P6 period (midnight to 8:00 AM) is the most effective way to lower costs.

Heated Pool Electricity Costs

Heating a communal pool in Mallorca or Alicante during November requires a high-output heat pump. COP (Coefficient of Performance) ratings are critical here; a COP of 5.0 means for every 1kW of electricity used, you get 5kW of heat.
Annual heating costs for a 12x6m pool can range from €2,000 to €5,000 depending on insulation and target temperature.

Seasonal Pool Electricity Usage

Pool energy demand is highly asymmetrical. On the Costa del Sol, usage is near zero from November to March, then spikes to 100% capacity in July and August. We help communities optimize their power contracts to handle this peak without overpaying in winter.

Variable-Speed Pumps & Efficiency

Modern variable-speed pumps (VFD) can run at 50% speed while using only 12.5% of the electricity. They are the single best investment a community can make to reduce pool-related energy waste.

Where the Money Goes: Common Sources of Waste

Inactive Periods

Paying for high capacity in winter for a pool that is only used in summer.

Reactive Energy

Fines for 'dirty' power from old lifts or large motors that could be fixed with a capacitor bank.

Lighting Inefficiency

Corridors and garages lit 24/7 with non-LED bulbs or without motion sensors.

Pool & Pump Optimization

Pumps are heavy users. Shifting their schedule to match off-peak 3.0TD periods (like P6) can drastically reduce the cost per kWh.

Solar & Pool Electricity Offset

Pool pumps are the 'perfect' solar load. They run during the day when solar generation is at its peak. Installing a collective solar system for the community can essentially make pool filtration 'free' during daylight hours.

Pool Electricity FAQ

Practical answers about communal swimming pool energy usage.

A typical 2HP pump costs about €0.30 - €0.45 per hour to run depending on your tariff. This adds up to €100-€150 per month in peak summer.
