Motorway stations have captive audiences, pay high state concession fees to operate on the toll network, and have higher staffing costs due to mandatory 24/7 operation rules.
Is supermarket fuel lower quality?▼
No. All fuel sold in Spain comes from the same Exolum (CLH) distribution tanks. Supermarkets simply choose not to add expensive proprietary detergent additives and sell the base fuel at a lower margin.
Should I buy premium diesel?▼

Does fuel quality differ?▼
The base hydrocarbon fuel is exactly the same across Spain. The only difference is the proprietary additive package (detergents, anti-foaming agents) injected at the distribution terminal by premium brands.
Can prices change during the day?▼
Yes. While less common than daily changes, stations can legally change their prices at any time and must report the change to the Ministry immediately.
Is E10 safe?▼
Yes, E10 (gasoline with 10% ethanol) is safe for almost all petrol cars manufactured after 2000. It is the standard 95-octane fuel across Europe.

This is a myth. Low-cost fuel meets the exact same legal lubricity and purity standards as premium fuel. Injector issues are usually caused by neglected fuel filters or contaminated underground tanks, not the fuel brand.
What is the difference between Gasóleo A and B?▼
Gasóleo A is standard automotive diesel. Gasóleo B is agricultural/industrial diesel. It is dyed red, carries much lower taxes, and using it in a regular road vehicle is illegal and carries massive fines.
How much tax is on a litre of fuel in Spain?▼
Taxes make up nearly half the price. There is a fixed hydrocarbon tax (roughly €0.47/L for petrol and €0.38/L for diesel) plus 21% IVA applied on top of the total.
Can I check prices for the Canary Islands?▼

What is Gasóleo Premium?▼
It is standard diesel mixed with a higher concentration of cleaning additives, cetane improvers, and anti-foaming agents to theoretically keep the engine cleaner and quieter.
Does premium fuel give you more mileage?▼
The energy density is virtually identical. Any slight increase in fuel economy from a 'cleaner' engine is almost never enough to offset the €0.10 - €0.15 extra cost per litre.
Are there fuel subsidies in Spain?▼
The general €0.20/L government subsidy ended in 2022. Currently, only specific professional transport sectors receive ongoing fuel tax relief.
Why are rural stations sometimes more expensive?▼
