Our Fuel Price Methodology
Transparency is the foundation of trust. We process millions of data points every year to help drivers in Spain find the cheapest petrol and diesel. Here is exactly how we source, clean, and calculate our pricing data.
1. Data Sourcing
All our raw pricing data is pulled directly from the Spanish Government's Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico (MITECO). By law, every active service station in Spain must report its prices to the government Geoportal. We do not rely on user submissions or third-party estimates.
2. Frequency & Updates
Our servers execute a background synchronization job multiple times per day. The data reflects the real-time prices displayed at the pump. We track historical changes daily at 09:30 AM CET to establish our daily national averages and calculate long-term historical trends.
3. Data Cleaning & Outlier Removal
We analyze over 11,400 active stations across the peninsula, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla. However, not all data from the government portal is immediately ready for consumers:
- We automatically exclude closed or inactive stations (stations reporting €0.00).
- We standardise brand names (e.g. merging variations of "REPSOL", "C.A.M.P.S.A", and "PETRONOR" into their respective parent groups for accurate market share analysis).
- We flag specific station types, parsing address data to identify Motorway stations (Autopistas/Autovías) to calculate the "Motorway Premium".
4. Calculating "Annual Savings"
We pride ourselves on providing realistic financial math. While some sites compare the cheapest station in Spain to the most expensive station in Spain to claim "You can save €2,000!", we know drivers don't drive across the country just to fill up.
Our Max Variance and Annual Savings metrics are calculated strictly within a single province or town boundary. We assume the average Spanish driver travels 15,000 km per year with an average fuel efficiency of 6 Liters / 100 km (resulting in 900 Liters consumed annually). By calculating the gap between the cheapest and most expensive station in your local area, we provide a mathematically sound estimate of your potential local savings.
